The Gyrotonic® methodology was developed by yogi and dancer Juliu Horvath. It is an exercise system that aims towards balancing the body by focusing on the integrity of the spine. The handcrafted wooden machines use pulleys and weights for gentle resistance, allowing the joints to move three dimensionally with support and guidance. In Gyrotonic exercises, flexibility, strength and articulation are emphasized simultaneously. The joints of the body, including the vertebrae of the spinal column, are safely articulated in twisting, spiraling and elongating movements. The connective tissue and muscle around the joint are strengthened as specific breathing patterns help form new connections. When the joints are balanced, flexible and resilient, all of life’s activities can be supported with ease. Gyrotonic is used around the world by physical therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and hospital rehabilitation units.
People from all walks of life can benefit from Gyrotonic exercise. Though we all exercise for different reasons with varying goals (mental health, weight loss, strength, coordination, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and stress relief to name a few), we will not thrive if we are strong but not flexible, if we have stamina but are constantly nursing an injury, and so on. Gyrotonic is effective because the system addresses the entire capacity of the human body in a harmonious way so that all benefits of health are experienced.
The inner realms of the self are very much linked to the physical body in which we live. When we dance or run marathons, it is not only with the body. When we write, design, make choices it is not only in the mind. The body, mind and spirit affect and hold each other. In Gyrotonic, the goal is to awaken, express, and heal the entire self through movement.
Yoga is a coming together of body, mind and spirit. Too often though, the mind gets in the way of the spirit, and the body becomes confused, stiff and unresponsive.
The work is based on multiple elements of Hatha and Kundalini Yoga. Moving from a sensory awakening of the physical body, it progresses through specific breath-work to activate and stimulate the nervous system.
Flowing naturally into breath-inspired movements, the body deepens and expands in an organized progression of seated, lying and standing sequences. The focus is on inspired imagery and rhythmical structure, distracting the mind from a false intensity.
This class provides a way to achieve flexibility in the body, while maintaining a coordinated control to pass smoothly from one shape to another. By allowing the mind to relax, rhythm and breath take over. At the same time, the class addresses elements of technique that apply directly to ballet placement, line and control.
Unlike a traditional Hatha Yoga class, positions are not held but repeated in fluid undulation that gently unravel the knots both mental and physical, giving the body a sense of comfort in its movement. Each day is taken for its own individual merits, so no two classes are identical. There is always a common thread, but, as in nature, there are many paths to the same end.
Concluding with a guided meditation, or stimulating transition, each person is brought back to the reality of their external surroundings and their own individuality, yet connected space.
Yoga Narada, originally called Yoga for Dancers, was developed and taught for over 30 years by Hilary Cartwright. Yoga Narada has evolved so that it is no longer only for dancers, and all walks of life can benefit.
Zero Balancing (ZB) is a hands-on bodywork system designed to align your energy body with your physical structure. Simple yet powerful, it focuses on your whole person, even when addressing specific needs. Considered at the leading edge of body/mind therapies, ZB moves beyond Western scientific approaches to body structure by incorporating Eastern concepts of energy and healing. What this does is enable a practitioner to work simultaneously with your structural and energy bodies to bring balance.
The structural body is what you can see and touch — bone, soft tissue and all the body organs. The energy body is the seen and unseen movement, including muscular movements, movement of tissue fluids, cellular and molecular vibrations, movement within the body fields, and movement of the life force itself. Your energy body directly affects, and in large part is responsible for, your mood, emotions and vitality. Changes in body energy and its fields usually precede illness and have a causal relation to disease.
After listening to the client’s needs and goals, a protocol is followed that typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes. The practitioner uses finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissue to create fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganise. Clients are fully clothed, seated and later laying down on a table.
Lauren’s Gyrotonic sessions are a masterpiece of precision and intuition. She was able to help me with my stiff shoulder, hip and back far more successfully than any physical therapy I have ever had. Lauren combines perfect technique with an intelligence and warmth that shows you how committed she is to her practice. Every session is different; there is never a sense of falling into a routine but rather that each series of movements is being adapted to your body’s condition in real time. My core strength and spinal flexibility have grown week to week, and my range of motion has increased exponentially! I absolutely recommend Lauren for clients of any age, health or physicality.
Within ten minutes of Lauren listening to and guiding my movement I knew she was the one for me and my search was over. Lauren is a great combination of youthful energy and soulful wisdom. She is able to find the path towards balance, flexibility and strength because she deeply sees and can verbalize that through clear communication. She has a passion for the work. Lauren keeps me focused on working hard with just the right amount of lightheartedness so the sessions are never monotonous. After 3 years with Lauren, I’m doing things that I never imagined I would be able to do at age 60 with several serious injuries behind me. Thank you.
I have very much benefited from private lessons with Lauren. I started about 3 years ago and went through a number of health challenges, including breast cancer with bilateral mastectomy. This required a personal approach and an understanding of body dynamics from Lauren. Lauren has provided me with her knowledge and support which has taken me through all the stages of cancer treatment and post-treatment recovery and rehabilitation. I am very grateful for her patient and attentive approach and for listening to my body’s needs, all of which have contributed to my wellbeing and healing.
Lauren’s knowledge of the body and various exercise modalities, along with her passion and intelligence, render her to be an excellent teacher. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Under Lauren’s tutelage, my level of fitness – as well as my body – have seen significant improvement.
I started working with Lauren to help me navigate my post surgical scoliosis with a rod and screws in my spine. To say that she has changed my life for the better is an understatement!. Through her calm, patient teaching, Lauren has shown me how to connect with my uneven body in ways I didn’t know were possible. She has revealed how to use my abdominals in the correct way, how to improve my posture, and so many other important lessons that I had struggled to learn in the past. I am healthier than ever in my body because of Lauren’s efforts, the changes are perceptible and priceless. She has given me the gift of a body I know I can work with despite my restrictions.
